Description
The molding and preparation workshop is a dedicated 57 m² technical facility equipped with a modern and diverse range of equipment, including an autoclave, micro-abrasive blasting unit, precision saw, pneumatic preparation tools, extraction arm, and ventilated cabinets for the storage of chemicals.
Activities
This facility is responsible for the preparation, preparation and consolidation of fossil material recovered during excavation campaigns. Depending on the mineralogical composition of the sedimentary rock, different extraction methods are used, either mechanical or chemical. This work is essential for the study and long-term preservation of fragile and unique fossil specimens. Sediment washing and sieving, followed by sorting under a stereomicroscope, are carried out as part of the search for microfossils. In addition, histological sectioning and embedding are also performed in the workshop.
The other main activity is the replication of specimens, particularly vertebrate fossils, through the production of silicone molds and complex casts.
Finally, the workshop is responsible for the restoration of specimens in the collections, as well as the preparation and assembly of osteological specimens.
Funding
The workshop has been part of our laboratory since its creation and is the result of numerous investments by the laboratory, funded by the University of Poitiers and the CNRS, including through the DIPEE Nouvelle-Aquitaine–Centre-Val de Loire programme.
