Description
The first two 3D printers are FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling) printers. They produce objects by depositing successive layers of melted plastic filament.
The laboratory’s latest acquisition is an industrial-grade 3D printer using InkJet 3D (UV inkjet) technology. It can produce 3D prints from photopolymer resin, with a palette of more than 10 million colors.
Activities
The applications of 3D printing (or prototyping) offer multiple benefits in the fields of scientific research, collections, education, and knowledge dissemination:
- Printing of internal structures (e.g. enamel caps, inner ears, or endocasts) or reconstruction of missing parts,
- Printing of comparative anatomy specimens (copies of specimens held outside the laboratory),
- Prototypes of devices for mechanical experiments,
- Support for the conservation and preservation of paleontological collections,
- Copies for exhibitions or public outreach events,
- Educational and inclusive prints (anatomical reconstruction or identification games).
