Description

3D scanners are based on structured-light technology. In addition to producing a virtual replica (3D mesh), they can also capture the textures of the object. Artec Space Spider scanners are used to digitize fossil or osteological specimens ranging from a few centimeters to several tens of centimeters in size. Intraoral scanners are used for specimens smaller than 5 cm.

Photogrammetry is a method used to reconstruct the surface of an object in 3D from numerous overlapping photographs taken from different angles. In addition to digitizing specimens in collections, this technique can also be used to generate 3D models of field sites (excavation sites, in situ specimens).

Activities

3D digitization, also referred to as surface scanning, consists of virtually capturing the external surface of an object in three dimensions.

3D image acquisition is essential for the study and promotion of fossil remains (virtual anatomical models of fossils held in collections in France and abroad, as well as osteological models for anatomical comparison). These raw data also represent an important resource for the dissemination and sharing of 3D datasets and for preserving the original specimens, which are often extremely fragile, thereby ensuring the long-term preservation and visibility of unique scientific heritage.
